National Squib UK East Coast Championship 6 and 7 June Royal Norfolk & Suffolk YC

Forming part of the RN&SYC 150th anniversary celebrations and that club’s June Regatta, 20 Squibs arrived in sunshine and a pleasant force three for the National Squib UK East Coast Championship. While the practice race lived up to these expectations, the next two days featured force 5 to 6, rain, fractured seas, overfalls and general misbehaviour from the weather gods. However, most of the fleet managed all four races, brilliantly managed in the most trying conditions by Race Office Peter Horton.

The first day saw Gerard Dyson and Tony Saltonstall, from Royal Yorkshire YC,  take an early points lead in the oldest Squib, the first production boat number 11 - now 40 years old but looking brand new. Their two second places gave them a narrow lead.

Whether it was the dancing and general leaping about caused by the after dinner cabaret Abbadaze or not, they could not maintain this impetus in the very slightly less heavy winds of day two. Lloyd Crisp and Nick Barrett, from nearby Waveney and Oulton Broad YC and sailing 43 In the Pink, came through to win from Nigel Grogan and Daniel Cripps from Royal Corinthian at Burnham in Helmut Schoing 105 followed by two Felixstowe Ferry SC boats - Peter White and Melanie Titmus in the brand new Noname 864 and Peter’s brother David White with Peter Ballam in Easy 83.

Racing was tight throughout the fleet and despite the very heavy winds and choppy seas, the weekend was a great success.
