As a practice event in preparation for the Squib Nationals 2010, Dun Laoghaire put on a small event for 450 boats and 3,500 crews in 24 classes from 9th. to the 13th. July 2009. The Squibs were among the bigger one design classes with 23 entries from all of the Dun Laoghaire Clubs, Howth, Royal North of Ireland and from Mayo. The format of the event was unusual insofar as each fleet sailed in a different area each day. We sailed races on courses with Fireballs, Flying Fifteens, Dragons, Etchells etc.
On Thursday afternoon in a light shifting breeze and sunshine, Squibs sailed in the shallow waters of Salthill, on the shorter triangular dinghy course with a downwind finish. Peter Wallace in 'Toy for the Boys' won both races. The evening entertainment consisted of chat, jazz, music, and song until 1.00 am.
On Friday the fleet moved to a more tidal area, South Bull, to a long Windward leeward course in stronger winds and flat water. Again 'Toys' led the fleet home. In the second race Emmett Dalton in 'Klipbok' finished ahead of the fleet. The evening entertainment consisted of pop music, beer, dancing and song until 2.00am.
On Saturday the Squib fleet sailed in the unfamiliar area of Sutton on the north side of the bay. Visibility was so poor that were were lucky not to lose any Squibs. Although 'Toys' was credited with a win, the first race as decared void after a protest from competitors who were declared 'Did not copmpete' by the race committee. However the racing was great fun with high waves and a strong wind to promote surfing. The second race was abandoned at the first windward mark when a rain squall threatened to reduce visibility to 100m. The evening entertainment consisted of formal dinners followed by wine, beer, dancing and music till 3.00am.
On Sunday the fleet returned to Salthill with a strong offshore wind shifting through 15 degrees. Race one was won by 'Aquabats' owned by Francis Harrington and Brendan Fogarty who were able to read the sailing instructions correctly despite the gusty conditions. The final race was won by 'Kerfuffle' Jonathan Craig and Hazel Ruane who used their lake sailing experience to good advantage and used the shifting winds to their advantage.
The afternoons entertainment included a visitation from a 'Green Dragon', and also graced by the presence of U2, clowns, jugglers etc. At this stage most competitors were running out of energy and all went to bed at 6pm.
